1500s PUEBLOS OF NM Pueblo Indians had a flourishing, agrarian, relatively peaceful population living in compact apartment like dwellings; sophisticated underground irrigation system; the pueblos had a well organized system of life, balanced with the environment; accurate oral tradition; celestial knowledge, movement of the sun, moon & stars, cosmic happenings; hunting/fishing; society based on agriculture; including plants/herbs, medicines; women were the focal point of family life, and food preparation; they traveled and traded with Central & South America in the 1500s there were100 Pueblos and 50,000 Pueblo Indians by 1680 only 22 pueblos &14,000 Indians remained, the holocaust of their civilization decimated by disease, starvation & execution, forced labor, tribute & religious suppression ~ Story of the Pueblos ~ PUEBLO HISTORY ~
