“The Rainbow Route”

1881-1922

From Silverton the railroad route went 20 miles northwest through Mineral Creek Canyon over the Red

Mountain Pass to Irontown. It was a one of a kind engineering feat. During it’s heyday it’s profits were

mile per mile more than any other railroad in the U.S. The railroad never reached Ouray because the

obstacles were too great. However a 7.8 mile long wagon road was built through Uncompahgre Canon

from Irontown to Ouray.
